Why Guatemala Was Just Named the Best International Travel Destination of 2025 And Why You Need to Go - Guatemala ganó como Mejor Destino Internacional 2025 en los Readers’ Choice Awards

Beautiful Streets of Antigua

As of June 17, 2025, Guatemala just earned the crown jewel of global travel: Condé Nast Traveler’s 2025 Reader’s Choice Award for Best International Travel Destination, and if you've ever wandered its cobblestone streets, danced in its volcano-lit skies, or shared a home-cooked meal with locals, you’ll know exactly why.

So… Why Guatemala?

Volcano Acatenango

Tucked in the heart of Central America, Guatemala is a land of living color, where ancient Mayan ruins echo history, volcanoes decorate the horizons, and local markets overflow with woven textiles, fresh tortillas, and soul-warming hospitality. Whether you’re chasing waterfalls in Semuc Champey, soaking in Lake Atitlan’s stillness, hiking active volcanoes like Acatenango, or wandering the colonial magic of Antigua—there’s no shortage of transformative experiences here.

Travel That Gives Back

Guatemalan Art

While rich culture and history, stunning natural landscapes, and growing infrastructure and accessibility beckon and wink, it is clear there is something deeper that distinguishes this special Latin American country. This distinguishing characteristic is where EXPLORENGO is grounded. Guatemala is praised for its authentic travel experiences, where travelers can connect with local communities, witness traditional crafts, and explore landscapes that feel untouched. In addition, Guatemala’s commitment to responsible tourism is emphasized. The Guatemalan Tourism Institute (INGUAT) underlines responsible and humane tourism, focusing on sustainability, respecting local communities, and preserving natural and cultural assets.

At EXPLORENGO, we believe your trip should do more than fill your camera roll. It should support locals, empower women, and uplift indigenous communities. Whether you are learning Bachata on a Friday night, cooking classic cultural dishes, or volunteering with a grassroots NGO, your trip can become a force for good.

Discovering Guatemala

San Juan La Laguna Street Art

It’s incredible to see Guatemala begin to get international recognition as a travel destination. If you ask anyone who has visited, they’ll tell you about the magic this place has, and that you’ll most likely find yourself coming back over and over.

I first solo traveled to Guatemala in January 2024. It was actually the first place I EVER traveled to alone and the first stop in a list of Central and South American countries I was heading to after. Even on my first day, I was amazed by this country. The bright and colorful buildings and architecture, the cobblestone streets, the surrounding Volcanoes and lush greenery all around me, but most of all the warmth and kindness of the people, completely captured my heart.

I was so shocked because all I had heard from friends and family members from my home country in the United States was how unsafe and dangerous Guatemala was, and they couldn’t believe I would ever want to travel there solo. But all I was met with when I got to Guatemala was genuine connection, beauty, and wonder. Traveling to Guatemala completely changed my life. Come let it change yours!
